Our DIY Kitchen Refresh!

When we moved into our home the spaces were all livable but not necessarily our style, namely the bathroom and the kitchen. The kitchen was the lesser of the two evils so we lived with this for about a year and a half before contemplating what we wanted to do with it. We knew that the kitchen had good bones and we wanted to keep the costs down so rather than hiring a contractor or spending a lot of money on new cabinetry, we decided to refresh the space with paint.

Originally it was a very retro looking kitchen with a lot of pink and florals going on. The benchtop was a dark laminate that was a combination of pinks and browns. The cabinet doors were a blush pink with wooden handles and the tiles were a creamy yellow with pink/purple floral feature tiles as well.

Oh and I forgot to mention all four walls were different shades of grey....

We began by giving the walls and ceilings a fresh coat of paint to match the rest of the rooms in the house that we painted when we first moved in. Then the real magic could happen.

We started off by removing all of the cabinet doors and then it was time for prep work. We thoroughly cleaned all the surfaces with sugar soap and once that was dry gave everything a quick sand to help the paint adhere.

Unfortunately when we bought all of our paint there wasn't any white primer so we had to use a cream colour instead but it worked just fine. The paints that we bought were all a part of the Dulux renovation range and we got both cabinet paint, a combo of tile and benchtop paint in one and a sealer. Each of the paints had a really long dry time between coats so we were left without a functioning kitchen for over a week. We had to create a makeshift kitchen in our living room and we ate a lot of slow cooker and microwave meals.

All up we did 2 coats of primer on everything, followed by two coats of the relevant pant and a coat of sealer. It was a tonneeeee of work but for the cost and the results we got, we couldn't be happier.

Love TM xx
